Sourcing
Why Kenya?
Cypress trees grow in many parts of the world. By choosing Kenya, we can support communities of small farmers in the country's rural areas while obtaining the highest quality oil possible.

How is it sourced?
Our Cypress essential oil is made from a blend of two cypress species: European Cypress (Cupresses sempervirens) and Mexican Cypress (Cupresses lusitanica). By using multiple cypress species, we not only make the essential oil sourcing more sustainable but also enhance its quality and beneficial effects. Many growers plant cypress trees as fences or windbreaks, or to provide shade, with the goal of eventually selling them for timber, but it can take 20 or 30 years for the tree to reach a saleable condition. The lower branches, however, must be pruned in the meantime to ensure the tree grows straight enough for timber harvesting. The essential oil is then distilled from these lower branches. It's an interesting fact, however, that the oil comes not from the wood itself, but from the leaves.

Mutual Benefits
Cypress is an evergreen tree species that typically reaches a height of 12–15 meters. In Kenya, it grows in the Mount Kenya region, as the climatic conditions there are most favorable for it. Cypress was introduced into Kenya centuries ago as a forestry species, within the framework of reforestation initiatives there. Since cypress grows excellently in the local climatic conditions, the government promotes its planting. In fact, it "leases" land in the Mount Kenya region to growers for free, as long as they ensure the undisturbed growth of the cypress trees. Growers thus benefit from both land use and the shade provided by the cypress trees.
