The History of Frankincense Oil Production

The production of frankincense oil is a process rooted in ancient traditions while also using modern technologies, in which the valuable essential oil is extracted from the resin of the Boswellia tree. doTERRA is one of the largest players on the market in this field. The company pays special attention to the sourcing and production of frankincense oil, helping to ensure high product quality and sustainability. The price of doTERRA Frankincense oil is certainly not among the cheapest on the market, but its quality is outstanding. This quality can be delivered consistently to customers.

The history and characteristics of the frankincense tree

The frankincense tree (Boswellia) genus includes several species that are mainly native to Northeast Africa and Southwest Asia. The best-known species include Boswellia sacra, Boswellia carterii and Boswellia frereana. These trees grow in dry, rocky areas
and are able to survive harsh conditions as well. The bark of the tree peels in a paper-like way, and when it is cut, it releases fragrant resin. This resin provides the basis for frankincense production.

The historical use of frankincense

Frankincense resin has been used for thousands of years for religious and therapeutic purposes. In ancient Egypt it was used as incense and for embalming, while in the Middle East it was an essential part of religious ceremonies. It is also mentioned in the Bible as one of the gifts brought to Jesus by the wise men from the East. In Ayurvedic medicine, frankincense is used as an anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving substance.

The production of frankincense oil

Frankincense oil is extracted from the resin of the tree. During the harvesting process, the bark of the tree is cut, allowing the resin to flow out and harden. This hardened resin is collected, and the essential oil is then extracted by steam distillation. During distillation, the resin is heated with steam
and the resulting vapour is cooled, after which the oil is separated from the water.

doTERRA sourcing practices for frankincense raw material

The doTERRA Frankincense essential oil is made from a proprietary blend of resins from three different Boswellia species: Boswellia carterii, Boswellia frereana and Boswellia sacra. These trees thrive under different environmental conditions: one species prefers sandy soil, while another is most at home in dry, rocky areas. For this reason, doTERRA sources resin from several locations to ensure the best possible quality for each type. By blending these raw materials, the oil delivered in each bottle can consistently meet high quality requirements.

Environmentally friendly and sustainable measures

doTERRA is committed to sustainable and ethical sourcing practices. Through its Cō-Impact Sourcing® programme, the company works directly with local communities in Oman, Somaliland and Ethiopia, supporting fair wages and sustainable practices. This approach not only supports local economies, but also contributes to the long-term survival of Boswellia trees. Although sustainability is not always ranked as the most important factor by everyone, we believe it truly matters that future generations can also enjoy this wonderful oil. doTERRA takes a similar view and supports research and sustainability initiatives aimed at protecting frankincense trees, making sure resin-harvesting processes do not damage the trees and that future generations can continue to enjoy the benefits of frankincense oil.

Quality control

doTERRA applies strict quality-control processes to ensure that every bottle of frankincense oil meets the highest standards. The company's Certified Pure Tested Grade (CPTG®) protocol helps ensure that the oils are free from contaminants and meet purity requirements. Because of this high-level quality assurance protocol, we also believe that our customers always receive the best products from us and from doTERRA. Among the products, the doTERRA Frankincense 15 ml oil and the doTERRA Frankincense 10 ml Touch are the items we can sell in Hungary, while doTERRA is present with several additional products on the US market. In addition, several doTERRA products contain frankincense as a base ingredient, which can be found on the individual product pages.
